May 2008

The Unitarian Society has one Sunday service during the summer at 10:30 AM. On Sunday, June 1, Rev. Joy Atkinson will speak on From Mozart to Motown, Bach to Blues.

The Chancel Choir will sing Confitebor Tibi with soloists Ellen Rockne, Kathy Leer, Bruce Hanna, and Tim Pettit; Laudate Dominum by Mozart, with Ellen Rocke and Katie Waltman, violin; and A Red, Red Rose by James Mulholland.
Our pianist, Natasha Kislenklo will perform Mozart’s Sonata in B flat major, Rondo alla Turca, and Concerto in D major, mvmt.2 with Katie Waltman, violin.

Marilee’s Notes: Mozart wrote the Vesperae Sollennes in 1780 when he was court and cathedral organist at Salzburg.  Today we are singing two of the five psalms set for this service. Confitebor tibi (Psalm 110) is a powerful movement in a sonata-like setting with concertante solo parts. Laudate Dominum (Psalm 116) is a contrast: an intimate aria that showcases Mozart’s melodic gifts. James Q. Mulholland, a professor of composition at Butler University, set one of our best-loved poems by Robert Burns. Mulholland writes lyrical melodies and rich, colorful harmonies in this contemporary music.

Katie Waldman’s appearance Sunday is made possible by a gift to the Choir from Jules Zimmer, in memory of Laurie Zimmer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Child Naming and Dedication Ceremony,
Sunday, 10:30 service.

Marilee’s Notes (10:30 Service): Thomas Morley (1557-1602) is remembered primarily as a composer of the English madrigal, which traces its roots to the earlier Italian madrigal, except that the English composers tended to choose lighter texts decorated with a “fa, la, la” refrain. Bobby McFerrin dedicated his setting of the 23rd Psalm to his mother, and UUA selected it to be one of the songs included in our new hymnal. The Gartan Mother’s Lullaby is a very old Irish folk song; Santa Barbara Music Publishing recently released this arrangement by Neil Ginsberg, b. 1969.
