Sunday Services During the summer the Unitarian Society has one Sunday morning service at 10:30 AM in the Sanctuary. This Sunday, June 22, 2008, Rev. Joy Atkinson will speak on Our Leaders, Our Heroes, Ourselves. Ken Ryals and Friends will play American Tune by Paul Simon. Music will be provided Natasha Kislenko, Piano.
Summer Sundays: Building Our Future; Building Our Community. All children should go directly to Starr King at 10:30 AM. This Sunday, children may create water color posters of our UU principles or engage in other creative play opportunities, lead by Laura Cabanatuan. Next week we will be building forts in the Starr King yard with Laura. Childcare will be available in Starr King as well. Please pick children up by 12:00 PM. A Story for All Ages will resume in September.
New Women’s Group. Women are invited to a drop-in gathering at the State Street IHOP, Sunday evening at 6:30 PM, where we will talk about ways of being together during this summer. We hope to gather in the back room. Contact Joanne Nay, 682-3381, for further information.
Power of Three. We are quickly closing the gap on our $2 million campaign, and we need all gifts large and small. Please respond to your recent mailing or calls from campaign volunteers. Let’s reach our goal by June 29 to celebrate Joy’s ministry with us.
It is NOT a secret. We appreciate Joy, our Interim Minister…and so plan to join in on June 29 for Joy’s final worship service, and participate in an after service reception in the Garden. USSB will provide drinks and cake. Please show your appreciation of Joy’s ministry with USSB by bringing your finest FINGER food to share.
Summer Pastoral Care. This is a reminder that, as ministers and staff begin our staggered vacations and study leave time, we remain available for pastoral care emergencies and needs. Should you find yourself in need of pastoral care assistance, please call the office, 965-4583. Appropriate referrals will be made to our Pastoral Care Network or on-call Minister.
Interested in Attending a Small Group Ministry Institute-August 17-22? The Ministerial Team is accepting applications from USSB members interested in attending this Institute at the UU Mountain Retreat in North Carolina. Funding is available to defray the cost of attendance and travel. Applicants will be expected to serve in the coming year on a Small Group Task Force. USSB Photo Directory Update. Our formal photo sessions were completed last week. Did you miss out? We would still like to include your photo in our directory. Please send a digital photo to assistant@ussb.org before July 7 and we will include you in the directory. Please send the photo as JPEG, and we strongly suggest a head shot.
Building Construction Notes. Our staff offices have been moved. Ken Ralph, Facility Manager, is now located in the front office (under the Parish Garden Tower); you will find Rev. Joy Atkinson in Classroom 1 of the Jefferson Hall Building; Rev. Melitta Haslund, Nancy Edmundson, Director of Administration, and Charla Bregante, RE Assistant are located in Classroom 2 (the usual “RE” Office); and Carol Doose, Administrative Assistant, Cat Robson, Clerical Assistant, our reception office and work room are all in La Paz Lounge.
Re-using/Re-cycling Magazines. During our construction period we will have a “simplified” Garden set up. We have discontinued our Magazine Table for the summer. Please do not bring your old magazines on Sunday mornings until further notice.
The office will be closed the week of June 23 to June 27, Monday to Friday, to accommodate multiple staff vacations. Phone messages will be checked daily during this time period, and pastoral emergencies will be provided for. In addition, the office will be closed on Friday, July 4.

High School Bridging Ceremony, Sunday, June 15, 10:30 AM. We will honor our high school graduates during the service as they move through this important rite of passage in their lives.

It will be meaningful to everyone, and especially helpful to our new minister, to have all our members and friends included. Our Building Locks Have Been Changed! Room users with scheduled meetings in Jefferson Hall and Blake Lounge will continue to access these rooms with their same church keys. All other locks have been replaced for construction and office security. Breaking the Silence, Torture Survivors Speak Out, Wednesday, June 18, 7-8:30 PM, Blake Lounge. The Chautauqua Speaker’s Forum presents the West Coast premiere of this important documentary. Producer/Director Valliere Auzenne will lead a discussion following the film.

Intergenerational Flower Communion Service, Sunday, June 8, 10:30 AM. Everyone is asked to bring a flower to add to the communal bouquet, and each person will get a flower someone else has brought to take home.
