Seventh Principle Action Network (SPAN)

The Seventh Principle Action Network of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara (SPAN) invites members of USSB to consider becoming part of its core planning committee, or assisting in other ways.

SPAN is deeply concerned about all of the badly frayed strands of the web of life – for example the massive loss of biodiversity, commodification of nature, the growing crises of social and extreme economic inequality, money corrupting our politics, and the culture of war, violence, and nuclear threat. As points of entry to these easily overwhelming challenges, SPAN has focused on presenting educational programs and discussions on climate disruption and water issues that have not received sufficient exposure.  The group has advocated against the unacceptable dangers of extreme energy projects such as tar sands and hydraulic fracking as well as the need to divest from fossil fuels and to rapidly transition to clean energy. At our table on Sundays, we also provide information about these matters and suggestions for interventions and ways to create the necessary political will for action at all levels of society.

SPAN will continue to present films and lectures; provide an information table; and possibly help with the just-now-unfolding UU-wide and beyond program “Commit2Respond” that will include a focus on climate justice, growing the climate movement and the transition to clean and safe energy.

SPAN, as always, will stress the need for a holistic, systems-based approach to issues and it will affirm that preserving the life-sustaining systems of the planet must take precedence over corporate profits.

Group planning meetings are expected to be held twice a month and will include soup and fellowship. Meeting times will be determined by the members and make-up meetings will be provided. In addition to the meetings, a minimum of several hours a week reading/auditing materials on the web will be necessary so that there is a common base of information and understanding.

Prospective core members of SPAN are encouraged to read “Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in without Going Crazy” by Joanna Macy and/or “This Changes Everything” by Naomi Klein; and to familiarize themselves with the projects, goals, and history of as well as the Copies of the above-mentioned books and a CD version of Naomi Klein’s book are available through SPAN.  An interview devoted to Naomi Klein’s book is accessible through Democracy Now.

If you are interested in helping with SPAN’s work, but unable to commit to core membership, SPAN would love to have your help in other ways such as setting up for events, seeing to refreshments, publicity, etc.

Stop by the SPAN table in the garden between services for more information. We look forward to your participation in the great journey of “coming back to life.”

A Short list of Resources on Global Climate Disruption for Climate Justice Advocates

The science is clear. Clean, renewable energy is available and price-competitive. The only thing lacking is demonstrating the political will for a habitable climate. The question is whether we can do this quickly enough to prevent the worse climate scenarios. No social movement has ever succeeded without significant numbers of people in the streets. We don’t need to convince the deniers to be successful. We do need to use our own voices and be present together at critical moments. and local affiliate 350sb on Facebook (environment section)
